Tired Nadal overcomes Petzschner to reach last 16 at Wimbledon

(CNN) -- A visibly weary Rafael Nadal battled into the fourth round at Wimbledon with a hard-fought five-set victory over Germany's Phillip Petzschner on Saturday.

The world No. 1, who is seeded second behind defending champion Roger Federer, finally triumphed 6-4 4-6 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-3 after needing treatment on his leg and arm -- and was also warned by the umpire for receiving court-side coaching.

The Spaniard, who was also taken to five sets by Dutchman Robin Haase in his previous match, will next face unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu -- who beat Thiemo De Bakker of the Netherlands 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (8-10) 6-4.

French Open champion Nadal, who was on court for three hours and 45 minutes, told reporters he would be ready for the last-16 tie following Sunday's rest day.

"The match was very difficult for me. His serve was unbelievable for almost all the match and I had to change my the strategy in the fourth set. In the end I think I played well," he said after beating the 33rd seed, who was playing in his third successive five-setter.

Serena to face Sharapova in women's fourth round

"It's a long season for me and I played a lot of matches the last few months, so I am happy to be in the fourth round."

If he beats Mathieu, 2008 Wimbledon champion Nadal will face either Swedish sixth seed Robin Soderling or No. 9 David Ferrer in the quarterfinals.

Soderling, thrashed by Nadal in the final at Roland Garros, moved into the fourth round for the second year in a row with a 6-4 6-2 7-5 win over Brazilian 25th seed Thomaz Bellucci.

British fourth seed Andy Murray had a long wait before taking his place on Centre Court after Nadal's match, but cruised into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 win against France's Gilles Simon.

The Scotsman, who has not dropped a set in London this week, will next play 18th seed Sam Querrey.

The American battled past unseeded Belgian Xavier Malisse, winning 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-2 5-7 9-7 in another late match.

Earlier, Ferrer joined compatriot Nadal in the last 16 by beating France's Jeremy Chardy 7-5 6-3 4-6 3-6 7-5.

French 10th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Germany's Tobias Kamke 6-1 6-4 7-6 (7-1) to set up a clash with No. 32 Julien Benneteau after his compatriot beat Italy's Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-1 4-6 6-3.
