Honours were even on the opening day of the Davis Cup final between Serbia and France in Belgrade.
Gael Monfils gave the visitors a flying start by defeating Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets, but Novak Djokovic responded in similar fashion against Gilles Simon to level the tie going into Saturday's doubles. Brazil progressed into the quarter-finals of the World Cup to play Holland after a comfortable 3-0 victory over South American rivals Chile. Dunga's side were in complete control of the game in Johannesburg, although Chile came out of the blocks firing for the first quarter-of-an-hour.

The decision comes in the wake of Frank Lampard's goal that never was against Germany, with Blatter issuing an apology to the English Football Association in the wake of the incident.

Rafael Nadal looked over his injury worries as he stormed into the Wimbledon quarter-finals with a straight sets win over Paul-Henri Mathieu. World number one Nadal had some injury problems during his five-set win over Philipp Petzschner in the last round, but looked on top form as he beat his French opponent 6-4 6-2 6-2 on Court One.
